Read the following passage then answer the questions below:

Scotland is one of the four national units that make up the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The other units are England, Northern Ireland, and Wales. Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, and Glasgow is its largest city. Scotland has its own education system, separate from the rest of the United Kingdom. Education for children is compulsory until the age of 16. Most primary and secondary schools in Scotland are administered by local authorities. There are a limited number of private schools, but fewer than 5 percent of Scottish children attend them. Children with conditions such as blindness, deafness, mental retardation, or other disabilities may receive special attention in ordinary schools or attend one of the specialized schools established for such children. The transfer from primary to secondary schools generally takes place at the age of 12. Children can legally leave secondary school at the age of 16. Many children remain in school until the age of 18 to prepare for college or for professional apprenticeships. There are 13 universities in Scotland. The four oldest and most well-known are the University of Aberdeen, University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, and University of Saint Andrews, all founded in the 15th and 16th centuries. For those students who do not go on to universities, Scotland has dozens of institutions that provide programs of study beyond the secondary level.
