Xie Jun, born in 1970, Chinese chess player, the first player from Asia to become the women’s world champion. On October 29, 1991, the day before her 21st birthday, Xie Jun ended more than 40 years of Soviet dominance in women’s chess by defeating Maya Chiburdanidze for the world championship. Xie Jun was born in Beijing and began to play Chinese chess at an early age. Xie Jun won the children’s chess championship of Beijing when she was 10 years old and the national teen chess championship when she was 14.
